What pick and pack is
Pick and pack is the process of taking the products in an order from their spot in the warehouse (picking), packing them safely (packing), and leaving them ready for the carrier to collect. It's the heart of order preparation: the step that turns stored inventory into a package headed for the customer's door.
It sounds simple, but it's where the delivery promise is won or lost. Pick and pack done right means the correct product, well packed, and dispatched before the cutoff (the daily deadline after which an order ships the next day instead). Done wrong, it means wrong orders, refunds, and negative reviews.
The process, step by step

Pick and pack is not the same as storing
Storing your inventory (warehousing) means keeping product safe, located, and counted. Pick and pack is the movement: picking, packing, and dispatching each order, one by one. A fulfillment service brings both together —storing and preparing— plus shipping across multiple carriers. That's why "I have a warehouse" and "my order operation is handled" are not the same thing.
Where it breaks (the errors that cost sales)
- Mispick (grabbing the wrong product): the customer gets something other than what they ordered. Fixed with barcode verification, not by eye.
- Late dispatch: the order gets prepared, but misses the cutoff and loses a day. On marketplaces, that hits your shipping reputation.
- Overselling (selling more than you have on the floor): happens when inventory isn't synced in real time across your channels. Avoided with technology that deducts stock instantly.
