The case barcode is not the product barcode
A GTIN-14 is the 14-digit number that identifies a packaging unit above the individual item — the master case, the carton, the pallet — and it is normally printed as an ITF-14 barcode. It is different from the code on your individual product, and it does a different job: the unit code identifies what something is; the case code identifies what and how many are inside.
That distinction feels minor until your first shipment reaches a warehouse. The product code answers "this is a 400 ml shampoo." The case code answers "this case holds 24 of those" — and that is what lets a full pallet be received by scanning a label instead of opening every box and counting.

ITF-14, GTIN-14, DUN-14: why there are three names
All three get used interchangeably, and they are worth separating:

In short: the GTIN-14 is the data, and the ITF-14 is how that data gets drawn so a scanner can read it. Per GS1 US, a GTIN-14 can also be encoded in a GS1-128 symbol, which is what you normally see when lot number or expiry date has to travel with it.
How it is built from the code you already have
You do not buy a new number. A GTIN-14 is assembled from what you already own:
- An indicator digit at the front, representing the packaging level.
- Your product GTIN (the item's UPC or EAN), without its check digit.
- A new check digit, recalculated over the full number.
The indicator digit runs from 0 to 8, and values 1 through 8 are assigned at the manufacturer's discretion to distinguish pack configurations: a case of 12 might be indicator 1, a case of 24 indicator 2. 0 carries a reserved meaning — it signals that the case contains units identified with a GTIN-12.
The practical consequence is the one that matters: every pack configuration needs its own case code. If you pack the same product in cases of 12 and cases of 24, those are two different GTIN-14s. Using one code for both is the mistake that makes inventory reconcile in cases but not in units.
What happens when cases arrive without a code
Nothing dramatic on day one. The problem compounds:
- Receiving becomes manual. With no case code, somebody has to open, count and key in. That takes longer and, more importantly, gets things wrong more often.
- Receiving costs rise. Almost every operator bills receiving by time or complexity. A clean, labeled pallet is received in a fraction of the time an unidentified one takes.
- Errors surface later. A miscounted case at receiving does not show up that day — it shows up weeks later as an inventory shortage, by which point you can no longer trace which shipment caused it.
- Large channels require it. Marketplace fulfillment programs and retail customers have their own case-marking rules, and the case code is the starting point for nearly all of them.
The minimum a master case should carry
Beyond the ITF-14, a case that is ready to be received carries:
- A readable product description in plain text, not dependent on a scanner.
- Units per case, printed as a number.
- Lot or expiry date when the product has one — if you handle expiry dates, this determines whether FEFO is even possible.
- The code on a visible face, not the one facing down against the pallet.
That last point sounds trivial and is the single most common reason a labeled pallet gets received just as slowly as an unlabeled one.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need ITF-14 if I only sell online and not in physical retail? If your product travels to a warehouse in cases, yes — the case code speeds up receiving and lowers its cost regardless of where you sell afterward.
Can I generate the GTIN-14 myself? The number is built from the product GTIN already assigned to you, following GS1 rules. What you cannot do is invent the base GTIN — that comes from GS1.
Can one code cover both case and pallet? Not if the contents differ. Each level and each quantity gets its own indicator digit.
What about mixed cases? A GTIN-14 identifies a case with homogeneous contents. Mixed cases are handled through other identification mechanisms, not a single case code.
